5 important things every Utah parent should do this summer

School’s out for the summer, and that means a constant, watchful eye on our kids is necessary. If you want to be proactive and make sure the summer months are healthy and fun, here are 5 things every parent should do.

Things Utah Parents Should Do This Summer

1. Plan a trip

Even better, go to a place that has no cell phone signal. Your kids may scream with upset, but there is no need to defend this, just simply put them in the car, and go there. For many young adults, teenagers, and children, mobile devices replaced reality. This is acceptable as the norm. Nevertheless, it is also good to get away from this constant digital/Internet connection. Take a breath of real fresh air and walk around to visit the coolest places the state of Utah has to offer. Visit one of Utah’s 5 National Parks for some breathtaking scenery and memories that your family will never forget.

2. Go swimming

Another way to get kids to put down mobile devices is to go swimming. If you cannot afford to put in your own swimming pool, there are plenty of public options if you are near a big city. There are also many wonderful lakes in the state of Utah that are fun to visit to go for a swim. If swimming is not your cup of tea, then try boating and/or fishing or other water sports. Utah lakes are beautiful, even just sitting on the shore having a picnic is super great!

3. Take care of your health

Not everything about summer needs to be just for kids. If you have kids, then by all means get them involved if you can, but also take some time to take care of your own personal health. What good is it if you get sick, and who will take care of your kids if you do get sick? This is why summertime is a perfect time to focus more on your own health. The weather is nicer and there are so many ways to exercise that only require going outside.

For parents in Utah, if their children attended public school, when school let’s out, before making plans for a happy summer, it is important to check your children’s head for lice.

For those living near Orem there is the Orem Family clinic that is a good place for a checkup for children.

If you’re traveling this summer and discover lice affecting anyone in your family, plan to make a stop at the Lice Clinics of America centers in the Gulf Coast, North Shore near Chicago or other location that’s convenient to you.

4. Try a new hobby or family activity

Give yourself permission to try a new hobby this summer. There are a few exciting things to do outside, like horseback riding, using off road vehicles, going mountain biking and more. Try an indoor hobby as well, especially when you can involve your children. Sleep in on summer Saturdays and plan a family picnic for summer Sundays.

5. Attend Summer school

Community colleges offers summer classes that usually have fewer students and allow adults to continue their education. Take a summer class for self-enrichment and/or to extend job skills.
