14 things you probably didn’t know about City Creek Center
Deep in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City stands a sprawling, upscale shopping and entertainment center known as City Creek Center. But how much do you really know about the mall that includes retailers like Tiffany, Michael Kors and H&M?
Here are 14 things to know about Salt Lake City’s newest retail destination:
1. The mall was entirely financed by the LDS church. The Church built the mall with a mission to help revitalize the downtown area (home to Temple Square), and the mission has definitely been accomplished. In 2012 alone, revenue downtown increased by $209 million.
2. The fountains were designed by the creators of the Bellagio hotel fountains. Called the America First Credit Union fountain, the water works show at the west end of the mall starts up every hour on the hour. The show includes patterned water and fire elements choreographed to music, giving the Bellagio show a run for its money.
3. You can feed the fish in the creek every Saturday morning at 10 am. Did you even notice the fish in there? Yeah, neither did we! But every Saturday you can join the crew for the weekly fish feeding at the trout pond near the Customer Service desk (outside of Macy’s)
4. The mall has all kinds of seasonal events. You can check the calendar for the current activities, but there’s bound to be something special going on just about every week. For example, starting the week of Thanksgiving, you can even take your dog to see Santa Claus.
5. More than 30 shops validate parking. Though it seems like the stores we go to never validate, apparently we’re just barking up the wrong tree. See here for the full list of stores that validate parking.
6. Many stores allow dogs inside. Though most animals aren’t allowed at the mall, City Creek is Fido-friendly. The website has a long list of stores open to your four-legged friends.
7. The waterfalls are 18 feet tall. If you haven’t noticed where the water for the creek is coming from, check out the waterfalls over by the food court. At 18 feet tall they’re sure to impress the little ones in your crew.
8. There’s a children’s indoor play area in the food court. Speaking of little ones, they’ll be entertained for hours at the impressive play area at City Creek. Because it’s indoors (the southeast corner of the food court) it’s a great spot for winter play dates.
9. Kids love the splash pad in the summer. And when the weather warms up, parents love taking their kids to the splash pads on the opposite side of the mall (on the west end by Nordstrom)
10. The retractable roof is 250 ft long and 60 ft wide on each block, for a total of 500 ft. Yeah, that’s a seriously impressive feat.
11. Travelers get perks. Any out-of-towners can get a City Creek bag when they spend $150 or more, as well as free admission to one of several different museums in Salt Lake. (Locals can score on this perk too, if they bring a friend from out of town)
12. You and your band can perform at City Creek. The mall uses an entertainment company to regularly book performers to play on the grounds. If you want a moment in the downtown spotlight, try booking a night here.
13. Nordstrom houses a delicious restaurant called Sixth & Pine. Aside from the extensive food court, The Cheesecake Factory, Blue Lemon and several other restaurants, City Creek is also home to some other hidden gem eateries, like Sixth & Pine. This classy café has an amazing selection of sandwiches, salads, pastas and more.
14. Bocata is owned by Salt Lake City’s own Settebello. Though it may look like another humble fast food spot in the food court, Bocata is a notch or two above the rest. This sandwich and salad joint is owned by everyone’s favorite Italian pizza place in SLC, and makes sandwich buns in the wood-fire oven, giving you the freshest, tastiest sandwich around.
