As we put winter behind us we’re coming up on wedding season.
June is the most popular month to get married and Utah is no stranger to weddings. It’s the day most girls dream about their entire lives. And to be fair, it’s probably a day that most guys at least have on their mind from time to time.
It can be stressful to plan the one day you’ve looked forward to and dreamed about for so long. Even the smaller tasks like picking tablecloths or deciding how many chairs you need can seem daunting when it’s finally time to decide. While it’s definitely not the easiest task, planning the perfect wedding is possible.
Here are 5 tips to help you make your wedding day as special as possible:
1. Set the right date.
While this is your special day, there’s probably some people who you wouldn’t want to spend it without. Family and close friends are an important part of the big day. Obviously you want to pick a day that works for you and your fiancé, but consider other peoples schedules as well. Avoid dates that coincide with events that many of your guests would plan on attending such as local sporting events or popular religious holidays (such as LDS General Conference in Utah). If you’re trying to save money you can consider weekdays rather than the weekend. Venues will have more availability and may be cheaper during the week. If you have guests flying in weekday flights and hotels are usually cheaper than during the weekend.
2. Use the landscape.

This can definitely apply to the wedding and reception, but this tip mostly applies to your engagement and bridal pictures. Here in Utah, we’re surrounded by beautiful landscapes- from the Wasatch Mountains, to the extremely unique Bonneville Salt Flats. Part of a perfect wedding is having the photographs to look back on later, and Utah is the perfect place to get beautiful and unique photographs. Depending on how important this is to you, you might want to even consider planning your wedding date around what season will go best with the type of photos you want.
3. Prioritize early on.
Regardless of how much planning you do, you will inevitably feel like you’re running out of time towards the end. As soon as you get engaged, sit down with your significant other and make a list of what is most important to both of you. Reference online tools such as wedding countdown calendars and other reference guides to make sure you’re not overlooking something. Everyone has things they care about more than others, so check different resources to get a wide range of ideas. Service providers like Magleby’s Catering often reach capacity, so the earlier you plan the more likely you’ll get the accommodations you desire. Figure out which things you’re willing to be more flexible on, and take care of the higher priority items first. That way, when your wedding day is rapidly approaching, you’ll only have the little, less important things to plan and focus on.
4. Look into different types of venues.

Many people in Utah choose local church meetinghouses because they are cheap and close, but there are many options that can provide a better atmosphere for your reception. Even if you’ve had a specific idea of the type of venue you want, don’t hesitate to look at every option. Some people fail to consider outdoor weddings or receptions, but looking at some of the available settings may prefer that to indoors. The beautiful mountain ranges here in Utah provide an amazing backdrop to any wedding. If you can’t decide between an outdoor or indoor wedding/reception, there are venues like Stone Gate Arts in Pleasant Grove that provide both.
5. Enjoy the day.
This can be hard to do since it will feel like a whirlwind, but a few simple tips will help you more fully enjoy the day. Pick a good friend or family member to be your personal helper. This person should be someone who is organized, observant, and thoughtful, but isn’t pre-occupied with any specific plans of the day so they can focus on you and your needs. They should know the schedule of the day and be comfortable working with the other people in charge to make sure everything is taken care of. And you should be comfortable with them being with you most of the day wherever you go. They can make sure that your hair is in place before pictures, run a quick errand (or coordinate with others to do so), and bring you snacks throughout the day to help you make it to the next event. They should bring you some food if you are planning on standing in a receiving line for extended periods of time so you get to enjoy some of the delicious food that you picked out for your reception. Next, try not to squeeze too much into the day. Leave some time to rest or to get ready for the next event. That way you won’t be stressed if something takes longer than planned and you won’t be quite as rushed so you can relax and enjoy more of the day. These tips can help make the whole day go more smoothly and make sure you get to slow down and enjoy the day.
These are only a few tips, but hopefully they’ve given you some direction on planning your perfect wedding. The most important thing to remember is that while it may seem like a stressful, overwhelming time, it will all be worth it on the day you say “I do.”
