‘Modern Family’ actor Ty Burrell writes love letter to Salt Lake City

Ty Burrell

SALT LAKE CITY – Ty Burrell thinks our fair city is humble and unassuming.

That’s quite an accolade, an not something you would expect to hear from a Hollywood actor.

Burrell plays Phil Dunphy on ABC’s “Modern Family”, and calls Salt Lake City his home, thanks in part to his stakes Beer Bar and Bar X at 161 E. 200 S. He penned an open “love letter” to SLC, which was posted on HuffingtonPost.com Wednesday.

“I’m sorry but over the past 6 years we’ve become stalkers. It’s your fault. We didn’t realize the incredible impact that having the differing viewpoints of both the religious and secular populations of Utah would have on us,” Burrell wrote.

Here’s what Burrell says he loves about Salt Lake City:

1. SLC is humble and unassuming

Despite (or thanks to) all the development in the Salt Lake Valley, Salt Lake City still seems to hang on to its unique small town charm. Many of its streets are wide and tree-lined, and there are plenty of eclectic and inviting neighborhoods to browse. From the pedestrian friendly City Creek Center to the rich history of the Marmalade District, there’s plenty to see and do.

2. Affordable lifestyle

If you don’t have a lot of coin, there are plenty of cheap, alternative ways of living life in Salt Lake City. The GreenBIKE bike share program is a great way to navigate the downtown area, and UTA’s free-fare zone can help you get where you need to go for free. Rent in the Salt Lake City area is affordable too, with one bedroom apartments averaging $741 per month as of April 2014, compared with $1,224 per month according to RentJungle.com.

3. Immediate access to the outdoors

Salt Lake is a stone’s throw from world class ski resorts, mountain bike and hiking trails, and family friendly activities. Where else could you leave the office, and in less than 20 minutes find yourself in the breathtaking beauty of the outdoors?

4. Salt Lake City’s diversity

Utah’s capital city is the headquarters of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and is also home to the annual Utah Pride Festival. From country-western line dancing, dueling pianos and breweries, to the annual Greek Festival and Pacific Island celebrations, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
