How to make your own laundry detergent

Does your dirty laundry pile look like Mt. Everest.

Any parent knows that kids’ clothes are dirt and stain magnets during the day, so it’s pretty easy to run 2 or 3 loads of laundry through the wash every week.

How To Make Laundry Detergent

I came across a few recipes for homemade laundry soap on Pinterest, so I decided to test one out.

Here’s what you need to make laundry detergent at home:

  • 1/2 bar of soap
  • 1 cup of Borax
  • 1 cup of washing soda
  • 1 cup of vinegar
  • 1 cup of baking soda
  • Large metal pot
  • Cheese grater
  • Long spoon

1. Grate the soap

First, grate the soap into the pot. I used Zest (because I like the smell), but you can use any kind of bar soap that you want. Put the rest of the soap bar back into the box, and save it for your next batch of laundry soap.

2. Add water

Add 1 gallon of water to the pot, and cook it on the stove until the soap shavings dissolve. You’ll need to stir the mixture to make sure everything mixes properly.

3. Add washing soda and Borax

When the soap is dissolved, add the washing soda and Borax to the mixture, and bring to a boil. The mixture will slowly start to coagulate, and will eventually resemble soup. It won’t be as thick as regular liquid detergent, but still works just as well!

4. Add cold water

After the mixture has boiled a few minutes, remove the pot from the heat and add 1 gallon of COLD water. This will help thicken the detergent, so make sure to mix it thoroughly.

5. Add vinegar and baking soda

Add the vinegar to the mixture, and then stir in the baking soda. Be careful, because the two of these ingredients mixed together will cause a reaction. Remember when you made a volcano at school when you were a kid? Let the mixture cool, and then pour it into a recycled laundry soap container with a spout.
