The 7 coolest movie theaters in Salt Lake

Though heading to the movies every Friday can get old quick, we’ve gathered a list of unique movie theaters that provide a twist on the ol’ dinner-and-a-movie date.

Luckily, Salt Lake City is home to old-school theaters, indie theaters and even drinking theaters. If you hit up each of these spots, you’ll never have a reason to stay home.

 

1. 

Utahns are lucky enough to have the Sundance Film Festival in their own backyard, but for the rest of the year, we count on The Broadway Theater to bring the most interesting, artistic and entertaining independent films that none of the other theaters are playing.

 

2. 

Known for playing cult and independent films, the Tower Theater is Salt Lake City’s oldest movie theater still in operation. You’ll want to check it out for the history alone! As a bonus, the Tower Theater is neighbors to cool shops in the 9^th and 9^th area and has an amazing collection of foreign and rare DVDs.

This iconic theater in the heart of Sugar House was just renovated, so stop by to check it out!

 

4. 

Movies and beer: it’s a beautiful thing. Brewvies skips the overpriced popcorn and candy, and instead focuses on local craft beers and unique cocktails to accompany your flick. (They also serve tasty handmade food to go along with it.) This 21-and-over theater plays just a few movies at a time, but the perk of being able to drink while getting lost in a movie is well worth it.

This one may be the most under-the-radar theater on the list, but we’re pretty excited about this one.

 

6. 

IMAX was all the rage when it first hit the scene, but we say its glory should live on. Some movies are a whole new experience on the BIG-big screen, like the planetarium’s amazing lineup of space movies and cosmic light shows.

 

7. 

The drive-in is such a classic movie experience, we’re lucky to have one in Salt Lake City. And the best of all, you get two movies for the price of one, as every showing is a double feature. Score!
